Will Jr.'s Red Team Reclaims the Ryder, 12.5-7.5

Saturday Matches
In the first match, Bill Holm and Joe Ely walked all over Victor Lahteine and Bill MacNevin on the front nine better ball match. On the back side, the two teams traded the first two holes and the match remained tied until 18, where Victor and Bill wilted under the pressure with a double bogey to lose another point.
In the second match Mark Chalas and Emil Giordano coasted to victory on the front, but then dropped the first hole of the back nine. They finally evened the score with a par on 14, and then closed out the match by winning the 16th and 17th holes.
But all was not lost for Big Will's Blue Team. After being down to Steve Buffington and Andy Rosen 2-0 after 2 holes, Paul McAuliffe and Pat O'Brien won the next 2 holes, only to drop the 5th to go back in the tank. However, Pat made a 4-net 3 on 8, and then Paul made a 3-net 2 on 9 to take the match. The back nine was a similarly close match with 3 lead changes until Steve and Andy won the last hole to squeeze out a much needed half point.
In the final match of the day between Jocko Tavares and Paul Rodrigues for the blue team and Earl Owen and John Gove for red, the two teams battled back and forth until Jocko's par on 7 put them up by 2 with 2 to play. Not to give up, John made a 4-net 3 on 8 to push the match to the 9th, but the teams tied with bogeys giving Jock and Paul the win, 1 up. On the back, Jocko and Paul were through messing around, and won the first 3 holes of the back nine and cruised to a 4 and 2 victory.

Sunday Matches
In an expert coaching move, Will Jr. told Jocko (2-0 on Saturday) that he had to work, and substituted in Robbie "Cannonball" Dries (0-2 on Sunday), captain of the Plymouth North Golf Team in his place, ruining team chemistry for the blue squad.

On the front nine, Joe and Bill Holm won a tight scramble against Victor and Cannonball, winning the 4th hole with a birdie, and then the 8th hole with a par to take the match 2 and 1.
Pat and Paul McAuliffe made their own birdie on 4 to tie their match against Emil and Mark, only to lose 3 of the next 4 holes in a 3 and 1 defeat.
In another great match Steve and Andy twice battled back from deficits and then took their first lead with a birdie on the 7th. Alas it was not to be as Paul Rodrigues and Bill MacNevin made a 4-net 3 on 8 and then closed out the match with a par to take the match 1 up. In the final scramble match, John and Earl won the 3rd, 4th, and 6th holes and held on for a 3 and 2 win.

Going into the back nine, Red now held a 3 point lead 7.5-4.5. A good lead, but not insurmountable. Looking to set the tone, Bill Holm wiped the floor with Cannonball, winning the first 5 holes of the back nine with 2 birdies and a gross 1 under par through that 5 hole stretch to take the match 5 and 4. Cannonball will be known as Spongeball from now on, as named by his playing partner Victor Lahteine. Victor and Joe also did battle, with Joe also making 2 birdies in his first 5 holes, and yet the match was still even up. They continued to battle, until Joe made a par to win the hole and halve the match on 18.
Pat O'Brien won the first 3 holes of his match against Emil, and eventually cruised to a 5 and 3 victory.
Paul McAuliffe twice had the lead against Mark Chalas, only to have Mark battle back to tie and then take the lead on 17. When they halved with bogeys on 18, Mark got another much needed point for the red team.
Steve Buffington had had enough of his shaky performance earlier in the competition, and won the first 4 holes of his match against Paul Rodrigues, who was undone by having to conform to a team uniform rather than his usual flashy attire.
Andy Rosen and Bill MacNevin battled back and forth with several lead changes, but Bill won the 17th to take a 1 up lead, only to have Andy rally to a fitting tie on 18 by making a par.
John Gove fell behind Bob Adams on the 13th hole, and 2 behind on 15 as Bob held on for the win to salvage some dignity for the blue team.
In the last match of the day, Art Keddy parred the first hole against Earl to take the lead, but then spit the bit losing the next 2. He evened it up with a great par on 13, but lost it again on 14 to Earl's par. But Earl made a birdie on 16 to take the match.

Club Championship - 15 Players

Eric Fernandez held on to his first round lead to take home this year's Club Championship! Scoring conditions were extremely difficult with fast greens and high winds in the second round. Tim Cuthbert had the low round on Sunday, but had an unfortunate stretch on Tuesday which took him out of contention. John Harkins and former champion Ed Monteiro were within striking distance, but neither could mount a charge on Saturday under the conditions, as Eric cruised to a 5 shot victory. Great win by Eric!

Greg Skellet made 4 birdies in the second round to take home the net championship, carding a 77 which is that much more impressive when you look at the scores of the leaders.
