Ryder Cup

As always, it was a fun event, despite an hour delayed start on Saturday morning due to rain. After a hotly contested first day, the Red Team captained by Will, Sr. held a 2 point lead, meaning Blue would have to go 6-3 in the Sunday matches to win. Alas, it was not to be, as Gabe King and Victor Lahteine beat Eric Fernandez and Paul Rodrigues 2 up, Jack Furtado and Steve Buffington took apart Paul McAuliffe and Ken Ferriera, and Emil Giordano and Mark Chalas took home Blue's only points in the Scramble format against Bob Adams and Art Keddy, making the score 8-4. Blue still had a puncher's chance, but they would need a big rally. No such luck as the individual matches were halved, which I guess was a moral victory. Congratulations to the Red Team for a hard fought win!

The Winning Team - Victor Lahteine, Gabe King, Steve Buffington, Jack Furtado, Bob Adams, and Art Keddy, captained by Will Stearns, Sr.

Southers Marsh Cup Finals

A fantastic day by Steve Buffington who saved his best for last, making 4 birdies and a hole-in-one on 16 on his way to a 65. What a round! Unfortunately for Steve, it was too little, too late, and he was unable to catch points leader Mark Chalas, who hung on for the overall win. Mark played in the marquee group with Mike McDonald who started the day 20 points back in second place, and Bill Holm who started the day in 3rd place, 70 back. What on earth does that mean? Basically, whoever had the best day on Saturday was going to take home the Cup. Mark and Bill shot identical net 64's while Mike struggled for his second straight tournament after a stretch of domination over the first three quarters of the season to end up 3rd. Thank you very much to everyone who participated over the course of the summer, we really appreciate it!

We have some more fun events coming up this fall including the Ryder Cup, another Cross Country golf event, and the Turkey Shoot.

Club Championship

Another epic showdown in the Club Championship! Tim Cuthbert held on to win by 1 shot over Eric Fernandez. After first round, Tim's even par 61 put him 2 shots ahead of Victor Lahtiene and Sean Kennedy, and 3 shots ahead of Eric. Tim then was 2 under on his afternoon round through the 14th hole and had assumed a commanding lead when things got interesting. He hit his tee shot on 15 into the fescue, lost the ball, and had to return to the tee to tee off again. He then followed that with a double bogey on 16, while Eric birdied to pick up 3 strokes and close within 1 overall. That's how it stood on the eighteenth tee, and both golfers hit the green in regulation. Eric had 50 feet for his birdie and left the putt 10 feet short. Tim's birdie putt meanwhile went 6 feet by the hole, leaving him a treacherous putt with a lot of break. Eric made his 10 footer, and it looked like we were headed to extra holes. But Tim, with ice water in his veins, calmly drained his putt for the victory. Nice shooting, Tim!

Meanwhile, Gabe King walked away with the net, playing his best golf of the summer. Congratulations!

2010 Ryder Cup

A perfect weekend for the Ryder Cup! Unfortunately, the contest was not as close as it has been in the past, with the Yellow Team of Will Stearns, Sr. running away with it. On day one, the Green Team of Will Stearns, Jr. hung on for a little while, but lost points to the team of Bill Holm and Tom Laxton who halved in alternate shot and won in better ball, and Mark Chalas and Emil Giordano who won both of their matches. At the end of the first day the score was 5.5-2.5. A good lead, but not insurmountable.

Things turned ugly for the Green Team during the scramble format on day 2, when Jim McCulloch and Bill Holm, Bob Adams and Mark Chalas, and Emil and Art Keddy all won their matches for the Yellow Team. The lone bright spot was Andy Rosen and Dick Johnson winning their match, but at that point the damage was done, and the lead stretched to 8.5-3.5.

It would take a valiant, Brookline in 1999, effot from Green to pull it out in the singles matches. Bob Adams started putting nails in the coffin with a hole-in-one on 11, but in the lead group, Stu Thompson opened with a win, and with Steve Buffington up 3 with 3 to play, it looked like a miraculous comeback could be in the making. Bill Holm had other ideas, and won the last three holes to salvage a half, and from there the handwriting was on the wall. The final score was 13-7 in favor of the Yellow team, who were gracious enough to let Will, Jr. off the hook without swimming in exchange for free beer.

Yellow Team (Records in parentheses)

Art Keddy (3-1)
Bill Holm (3-1)
Bob Adams (3-1)
Emil Giordano (2.5-1.5)
Jack Furtado (2-2)

2010 Club Championship

With more than half the field carrying handicaps of 5 or less, the club championship was stacked and wide open this year. After dark horse Sean Kennedy went out in 64 to take a one stroke lead after the first round, Tim Cuthbert rallied in the second round with an even par 61 to take first place. Eric Fernandez shook off a triple bogey on 14 in the first round to claim second place. Victor Lahteine cruised to win the low net, and Paul Rodrigues won the 18 hole blue tee competition.

2010 Senior Championship

Leigh MacKay, Tim Cuthbert, and Steve Buffington were all tied at 33 after the front nine, with Vicky MacKay 2 strokes back at 35. Tim made a birdie on 10 to take a one shot lead. On the next tee, Tim hit first and almost holed out, leaving a tap in for birdie. Meanwhile, Leigh hit it into the front left bunker with the pin back left, and couldn't even see the flag from the bunker way below the putting surface. Tim was thinking he was picking up at least one more stroke when Leigh knocked his bunker shot into the cup for a birdie to stay one shot behind. On the 12th hole, Tim made a par, while each of the other 3 members of the foursome birdied - to leave the match all square at even par between Tim and Leigh. It stayed like that until they reached the 15th green, where Tim had a 20 foot putt for birdie, and Leigh was once again left with an impossible chip from a downhill lie. Again, Leigh miraculously chipped in for birdie, and Tim had to settle for par. When Leigh almost got a hole in one on 16, the handwriting was on the wall, and he cruised from there to a 5 stroke victory.
